A missed task here, a delayed clean there, and over time, the workplace starts to feel different. Floors look worn. Shared spaces feel less organised, and small issues begin to stand out.

This is what happens when cleaning standards drop without a routine. Without structure, consistency becomes difficult to maintain.

Inconsistent Cleaning Creates Gaps

When cleaning is not scheduled properly, it becomes inconsistent. Some areas receive attention while others are overlooked. One day the kitchen is clean, and the next day it is not. Washrooms may look fine at the beginning of the week, but can decline by the end.

These inconsistencies accumulate over time. Without a clear routine, people may not notice the changes right away. However, cleanliness standards continue to slip quietly in the background.

Informal Cleaning Does Not Work Long Term

In many workplaces, staff take on small cleaning tasks. Someone wipes a surface. Someone empties a bin. At first, this seems manageable. Over time, though, it creates inconsistency.

Cleaning depends on who is available rather than on what needs to be done. Important areas are missed, and standards vary from day to day. This approach rarely holds up, especially in busy environments.

Missed Areas Lead to Gradual Decline

Without regular cleaning, it’s easy to overlook certain areas, such as corners, vents, under furniture, and high-touch surfaces. Dust accumulates, dirt spreads, and shared spaces become increasingly difficult to manage.

Since the change occurs gradually, it often goes unnoticed until the problem becomes apparent. At that point, restoring cleanliness requires more time and effort.

Why Routine Cleaning Keeps Everything Steady

Regular cleaning establishes a structured routine. Tasks are completed on time, ensuring consistent standards in all areas. Floors are maintained, surfaces are cleaned regularly, and shared spaces remain usable.

This consistency helps prevent problems from arising and makes it easier to manage the workplace on a day-to-day basis.

How Contract Cleaning Removes the Risk

A structured contract cleaning service eliminates uncertainty. With clear schedules, trained teams, and established routines, you can be confident that nothing will be overlooked. Cleaning becomes a reliable, proactive process rather than a reactive one.

This method enhances hygiene, safety, and overall workplace standards while relieving additional pressure on staff.

Cleaning standards decline without a routine but remain consistent with proper structure. Find your nearest ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services to ensure dependable cleaning that keeps your workplace functioning smoothly every day.

Most workplaces may appear clean at first glance. Desks seem tidy, floors look clear, and shared spaces feel orderly. However, a buildup of dirt goes unnoticed in the background. Dust, bacteria, and general wear accumulate over time, even when nothing seems obviously out of place.

If these small issues are not addressed regularly, they can escalate into larger problems that impact hygiene, comfort, and overall standards.

Dust in Carpets and Vents

Dust builds up faster than many people expect. It settles into carpets, along skirting boards, and inside ventilation areas. In high-traffic environments, this build-up increases quickly as people move through the space.

Carpets trap dust deep within the fibres. Without regular vacuuming and maintenance, this dust remains trapped and affects air quality. Vents and high surfaces also collect particles that circulate throughout the building.

Routine cleaning removes dust before it spreads and helps maintain a fresher environment.

Bacteria on Shared Touchpoints

Shared surfaces host more bacteria than many realise.

Door handles, desks, light switches, and communal equipment are touched repeatedly throughout the day.

Without regular cleaning, these surfaces can become sources of contamination. Consistent disinfection reduces the risk of bacterial transmission among staff and visitors, promoting a safer, more hygienic work environment.

Build-Up in Kitchens and Washrooms

Kitchens and washrooms are in frequent use, making them susceptible to buildup.

Small spills, food waste, and regular use can quickly cause hygiene problems if not properly managed. Bins can overflow, surfaces can become stained, and bad odours can develop.

These issues may impact staff morale and perception of the workplace. Regular cleaning helps maintain cleanliness, control these issues, and prevent further escalation.

How Quickly Standards Can Slip

Cleaning standards tend to decline gradually rather than all at once. Missing a task here or delaying a clean there gradually makes the environment feel less organised and comfortable.

Over time, these small gaps accumulate, turning minor issues into bigger challenges that are harder to manage.

Why Regular Cleaning Prevents Bigger Problems

Routine cleaning maintains cleanliness and prevents buildup by removing dirt, dust, and bacteria early on.

It also helps protect surfaces, flooring, and shared areas from long-term damage. Addressing issues through regular cleaning is simpler and more effective than fixing problems later.

Consistent cleaning promotes hygiene, safety, and a professional atmosphere.

Workplace cleaning buildup is often hidden, but its impact is real.

Mental Health Awareness Week serves as an important reminder that our wellbeing at work is influenced by various everyday conditions. It’s not just about the workload or meeting deadlines. The workplace environment also plays a significant role. Factors like cleanliness, organisation, and comfort can greatly affect how employees feel throughout the day.

The connection between workplace environment and wellbeing is often subtle, yet consistent. When spaces feel organised and well-maintained, individuals tend to feel more at ease and focused.

Clean and Organised Spaces Reduce Stress

Clutter can be a major source of distraction. Messy desks, untidy shared spaces, and disorganised meeting rooms can make it difficult to concentrate. Over time, this leads to increased background stress.

Clean and organised environments reduce visual noise. When desks are tidy and shared areas are well-kept, employees can focus on their work without unnecessary distractions. This contributes to a calmer and more productive working atmosphere.

The Impact of Poor Hygiene on Mood

Hygiene has a significant impact on how people feel. Unclean kitchens, poorly maintained restrooms, and overflowing waste bins can create discomfort. While these issues may seem minor, they accumulate over time.

Consistent cleaning is essential to prevent these problems. When hygiene standards are upheld, the workplace becomes more comfortable and easier to manage. This contributes to both well-being and morale.

Break Areas and Shared Spaces Matter

Break areas provide employees with an opportunity to step away from their work. However, if these spaces are unclean or cluttered, staff may be reluctant to use them.

Clean and well-maintained break rooms encourage people to take proper breaks. Comfortable shared spaces help staff recharge during the day, which supports their focus and energy levels.

Air Quality and Everyday Comfort

Air quality is an important factor to consider. Dust accumulation and poor ventilation can make spaces feel stuffy and uncomfortable, affecting people’s wellbeing, even if they don’t immediately recognise the cause.

Regular cleaning helps reduce dust and maintain a fresher environment. When combined with good ventilation, this creates a more comfortable workspace.

How Cleaning Supports a Calmer Workplace

A calm workplace is not a result of chance; it is cultivated through consistent routines and careful attention to detail. Clean floors, organised desks, and well-maintained shared spaces all contribute to a more stable environment.

Professional cleaning plays a vital role in maintaining these standards daily. It alleviates minor irritations that can impact mood and helps create a workplace where everyone feels more comfortable and at ease.

Mental Health Awareness Week highlights the importance of everyday support. The workplace environment plays a key role in that support.

Find your nearest ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services to help maintain clean, organised environments that support workplace wellbeing. Consistent cleaning routines create spaces where people can feel comfortable, focused, and ready for the day ahead.

Healthcare cleaning standards significantly impact how safe and trusted a medical environment feels.

In GP surgeries and clinics, patients take note of their surroundings as soon as they enter. Clean floors, tidy waiting areas, and well-maintained facilities all help build confidence before an appointment begins.

Consistent cleaning is not just about appearance. It supports infection control, compliance, and daily operations.

Consistent Cleaning in GP Surgeries and Clinics

GP surgeries and clinics experience a steady stream of patients throughout the day. Waiting rooms, consultation areas, and shared facilities are utilised constantly. Without regular cleaning, these spaces quickly become difficult to manage.

Consistent routines maintain steady standards, keeping surfaces clean, bins emptied, and shared areas organised. This reduces disruption and allows staff to focus on patient care rather than facility maintenance.

Healthcare cleaning standards depend on this consistency. Without it, small issues build up quickly.

Infection Control and High-Touch Areas

Infection control is a crucial aspect of healthcare cleaning. High-touch areas, such as door handles, reception desks, chairs, and equipment, require regular attention. These surfaces can harbour bacteria if not cleaned frequently.

Professional cleaning teams adhere to structured routines that emphasise key areas. Regular disinfection reduces the spread of illness and fosters a safer environment for both patients and staff.

Meeting CQC Expectations and Compliance

Healthcare facilities must comply with strict standards. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) requires these facilities to be clean, well-maintained, and properly managed. This includes established cleaning routines and proof that standards are being upheld.

Professional cleaning helps ensure compliance by providing structure and consistency. Tasks are completed on time, and issues are reported promptly. This helps practices stay prepared for inspections at all times.

Patient Confidence Starts With Cleanliness

Patients often form opinions quickly. A clean and well-organised environment fosters reassurance and trust. Conversely, visible dirt or clutter can raise concerns, even if the quality of clinical care is high.

Maintaining high cleaning standards in healthcare is essential to creating a calm, professional setting where patients feel comfortable.

Why Routine Matters More Than Reactive Cleaning

Deep cleaning is important, but it should not replace daily cleaning routines. Reactive cleaning addresses issues as they arise, whereas routine cleaning helps prevent them from occurring in the first place.

Maintaining a consistent cleaning schedule keeps environments stable, reduces risks, and upholds long-term standards.

Healthcare cleaning standards support safety, compliance, and trust every day. ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services UK provides structured cleaning routines for GP surgeries and healthcare settings, helping maintain safe, consistent environments for patients and staff.

Schools and colleges are busy, demanding environments. From early mornings to late afternoons, classrooms, corridors, and shared spaces are in constant motion. Cleaning in education settings must support learning without disrupting it. That is where our value begins.

Our experience in the education sector has demonstrated that dependable cleaning is essential to the daily operation of a school. Clean classrooms enhance student concentration. Tidy corridors and dining areas minimise distractions. Well-maintained toilets boost comfort and hygiene. These details are often more important than people realise.

Consistency Builds Trust in Education Settings

Trust is crucial in schools and colleges. Leaders must be confident that cleaning will meet the same standard every day, without needing constant oversight. Our teams follow clear routines, so classrooms are prepared each morning, and shared spaces stay safe and tidy throughout the day.

Because standards remain consistent, staff can concentrate on teaching rather than facilities. This dependability fosters trust and eases pressure on site teams.

Partnership With Schools and Colleges

We collaborate with education leaders, caretakers, and facilities teams. We take time to understand timetables, term dates, exams, and after-school activities. This understanding enables us to plan cleaning around the school day and adjust when routines change.

Clear communication ensures everyone stays informed. When needs change, we respond swiftly and adjust our approach.

Experience That Adapts Through the Year

Education environments constantly evolve. Winter brings illness pressures. Exam periods alter building use. Events and open days boost footfall. Our experience helps us adapt cleaning routines while maintaining standards.

This flexibility provides long-term value and helps schools maintain safe, supportive environments for students and staff.

If your school or college needs a cleaning partner that delivers value through trust, experience, and ongoing support, speak to your local ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services. We help education environments stay clean, safe, and ready for learning every day.

Fix the Mix in 2026 was this year’s ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Annual Conference. We brought together several businesses from the franchise network UK wide from business owners to immediate management teams and key sales people- pivotal to the success of the brand as a whole. As the biggest event in the calendar, the conference focused on performance, growth, and practical ways to strengthen each business, working together under one brand and working in collaboration with our range of strategic partners from leading names across the franchising space.

A clear view of performance

The event opened with a welcome from Alan Lewin, Managing Director of ServiceMaster Brands UK, who set out where the network stands today. By benchmarking our performance against local competitors and thoroughly analysing key growth metrics, he demonstrated that our brand and business model are not only thriving but getting stronger and more resilient in today’s market place, allowing us to successfully navigate the challenges present in today’s world.

The takeaway was direct. Many businesses are performing ahead of their local market. There is clear opportunity to build on that momentum and be even better than we were yesterday.

Support from trusted partners

Throughout the day, strategic partners joined us to bring insight across key areas that impact daily operations and long-term growth and enable our brands to gain competitive advantage. Speaking from their level of expertise, we were able to hyper-focus on key areas such as:

  • HR and adapting to new legislation
  • Quality, Value and Service- maintaining standards that keep us at a top
  • Recruitment strategies in a competitive labour market
  • Marketing support to increase local visibility

These sessions focused on practical steps that our teams could take away and apply to their businesses the very next day!

Our Sponsors

We had the pleasure of some of the industry’s leading names who joined us for the day’s programme and gala evening and awards night. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors who not only supported us in delivering a great conference, but also who support our business model and partners by providing expert solutions that help us maintain our competitive edge.

HSBC UK, Franchise Resales, Besley and Copp, Sociolocal, DragonFly Crowd, Clarity Outsourcing, Coconut Marketing,Wirehouse, Yopp, Paragon Marketing and Perks Direct were amongst a few who supported our event.

Practising Positivity with Steve Head

A key moment of the conference came from motivational speaker Steve Head, who delivered a high-energy session focused on mindset and consistency.

His message was clear. Positivity is a skill you practise, not something you wait for.

He introduced the concept of improving by 1 percent each day. While small, these actions build over time and lead to measurable change.

Delegates were encouraged to:

  • Take control of how they respond to pressure
  • Build simple daily habits that support a positive mindset
  • Stay consistent, even when progress feels slow
  • Apply the same approach across both work and home life

This approach links directly to business performance. Better mindset leads to stronger leadership, improved team culture, and more consistent results.

Focused breakout sessions

Breakout sessions gave delegates targeted support based on their role within the business. Each session was designed to address real challenges and deliver practical solutions:

  • HR and people management
  • Recruitment and retention
  • Maintaining service standards and improving operational efficiency
  • Strategic marketing to support local business growth

These sessions ensured every attendee left with clear, relevant actions.

Supporting Alzheimer’s Society

The conference also raised £2,350 for Alzheimer’s Society through a charity auction held during the evening.

Thank you to everyone who contributed. The level of support across the network made a real difference. Kim Hession, our regional fundraiser from the charity joined the event and drew the winners on the night.

Recognising excellence across the network

The conference closed with an awards evening celebrating achievements across ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services.

Recognition covered a range of areas, including:

  • Record-breaking business growth
  • Individuals who went above expectations
  • Initiatives supporting the brand’s journey to net zero

The top awards of the night were:

What this means going forward

The Annual Conference 2026 set a clear direction for the year ahead. The network is focused, aligned, and ready to build on strong foundations.

There is a busy year in front of us. Demand is growing, expectations are rising, and the opportunity to win more business is clear. The combination of practical support, shared insight, and a consistent approach puts the network in a strong position to respond.

The message from the day carries forward. A positive mindset, backed by consistent action, drives results. Small improvements, applied daily, will continue to build stronger businesses across the network.

Momentum is already there. The focus now is to maintain it, push forward, and make 2026 a year of sustained growth.

Many businesses think about cleaning when something looks dirty. A deep clean gets scheduled, the space looks better, and attention shifts elsewhere. While deep cleaning has its role, it does not replace regular maintenance. When it comes to workplace standards, routine cleaning and deep cleaning are not comparable.

Consistency usually makes the greater difference. Regular cleaning keeps environments safe, presentable, and easier to manage on a daily basis.

The Difference Between Routine Cleaning and Deep Cleaning

Routine cleaning concentrates on maintaining standards. It involves daily or scheduled activities such as vacuuming, mopping, wiping surfaces, emptying bins, and cleaning washrooms. These tasks help prevent dirt, dust, and clutter from building up.

Deep cleaning is more comprehensive. It may include carpet extraction, machine floor scrubbing, high-level dusting, or detailed cleaning behind equipment. These tasks are essential, but they are not required daily.

Without regular cleaning, even the most thorough deep clean won’t last long. Dirt quickly comes back, and standards start to slip.

Why Consistency Keeps Workplaces Safe

Health and safety depend on consistent routines. Clean floors lower slip risks. Clear walkways prevent trips. Sanitised surfaces help control the spread of illness. These results only occur when cleaning is done regularly.

If cleaning only happens occasionally, problems accumulate between visits. Dust gathers, bins overflow, and shared spaces become more difficult to manage. Over time, this creates unnecessary risk.

Consistent cleaning helps keep the environment under control.

Regular Cleaning Protects Your Workplace

Routine cleaning also protects flooring, furniture, and fittings. Dirt and grit can damage hard floors. Dust can affect equipment. Stains become harder to remove if left untreated for too long.

Frequent cleaning prevents this wear and tear and helps buildings stay in better condition for longer. This reduces repair costs and maintains a professional appearance.

Deep cleaning works best as part of a plan, not as a replacement for regular care.

Why Businesses Choose Contract Cleaning

Contract cleaning provides structure. Tasks occur on schedule, standards remain consistent, and issues are identified early.

This facilitates easier management of the workplace without constant supervision. Reliable cleaning also boosts staff morale. People perform better in environments that feel organised and well-maintained.

Consistency Delivers Long-Term Value

Deep cleaning enhances appearance temporarily. Routine cleaning maintains consistent standards daily. The best outcomes are achieved by combining both, with regular cleaning serving as the foundation.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services UK offers structured cleaning routines that maintain workplaces as safe, tidy, and easy to manage.

Health and safety cleaning compliance is a crucial part of managing any workplace. Many businesses concentrate on equipment, training, and procedures, but cleaning plays an equally vital role. Floors, shared spaces, washrooms, and entrances all influence how safe a building feels and how safely people can work. Without regular cleaning, risks rise rapidly.

Professional cleaning helps organisations maintain safe, compliant environments every day.

Clean Floors and Walkways Reduce Workplace Accidents

Slips, trips, and falls are among the most common causes of workplace injuries in the UK. Wet floors, dust accumulation, and cluttered walkways all heighten the risk. Regular cleaning helps manage these hazards.

Professional cleaning teams inspect entrances, corridors, and high-traffic areas as part of their routine. Dirt and debris are removed before they become hazardous. Entrance matting is maintained, and floors are kept clean and dry.

These simple measures support health and safety, cleaning compliance, and help prevent avoidable accidents.

Hygienic Washrooms and Shared Areas Support Workplace Safety

Washrooms, kitchens, and break rooms are used throughout the day. Without regular cleaning, these areas can quickly become unhygienic. Poor hygiene may lead to illness, complaints, and reduced staff morale.

Consistent cleaning keeps surfaces sanitised, bins emptied, and supplies stocked. This helps maintain hygiene standards and creates a safer environment for staff and visitors.

Clean shared spaces are not only about appearance; they are part of meeting health and safety responsibilities.

Cleaning Helps Meet Compliance Requirements

Many industries must adhere to strict health and safety regulations. Offices, healthcare environments, schools, retail outlets, and housing associations all need to demonstrate that their buildings are properly maintained.

Professional cleaning brings structure and routine. Tasks are finished punctually, problems are reported promptly, and standards stay consistent. This helps show compliance with health and safety cleaning requirements during inspections or audits.

Routine cleaning also helps stop small problems from turning into bigger maintenance issues.

Consistent Cleaning Makes Compliance Easier to Manage

Health and safety depend on consistency. When cleaning routines are reliable, risks are lowered and workplaces become easier to manage.

Working with an experienced contract cleaning provider gives organisations confidence that cleaning standards are upheld at all times. Clear schedules, trained teams, and regular communication all contribute to a safer working environment.

For organisations needing reliable support to keep their workplace safe, clean, and compliant, ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services UK offers the experience and consistency required every day.

International Cleaning Week is an opportunity to recognise something most people rarely consider. Clean environments do not occur by chance. They result from trained, dependable teams showing up daily and carrying out their work properly.

Across offices, healthcare settings, schools, retail spaces, warehouses, and communal buildings, cleaning underpins everything else. When cleaning is done well, it sinks into the background. When it’s not, it becomes immediately obvious.

That dependable consistency is worth recognising.

Why Cleaning Matters More Than People Realise

Clean workplaces do more than look good.

  • They safeguard health.
  • Lower risks.
  • Foster environments where people can concentrate without disruption.

A tidy office kitchen feels more functional. A clean classroom helps students focus. A well-maintained communal corridor fosters trust with residents. These details influence how people feel throughout their working day.

Cleaning also promotes safety. Clear walkways lower risks. Regular disinfection of shared spaces helps reduce illness. Consistent routines stop minor issues from becoming bigger problems.

International Cleaning Week highlights these practical, everyday benefits.

Recognising Professional Cleaning Teams

Professional cleaning requires training, structure, and experience. It is not just about wiping surfaces. It involves understanding materials, managing routines, following health and safety standards, and adapting to each environment.

At ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services UK, teams operate across various sectors with this level of professionalism daily. They adhere to clear processes, communicate openly, and maintain consistent standards that businesses depend on.

Cleaning teams often work outside regular hours.

  • They prepare workplaces before doors open.
  • They restore order after busy days.
  • Their work supports productivity, well-being, and customer confidence.

Supporting Businesses Across the UK

International Cleaning Week also offers a chance to recognise the partnerships behind the service. Cleaning works most effectively when it is a collaborative effort between provider and client.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services UK collaborates with organisations to understand their needs, schedules, and pressures. This understanding enables cleaning to support operations seamlessly without causing disruption.

Experience, reliability, and attention to detail build trust over time.

More Than Clean, Real Support

International Cleaning Week is a time for recognition. It emphasises the significance of professional cleaning and the individuals who perform it.

For organisations that depend on clean, safe, and well-maintained environments, a reliable cleaning partner truly makes a difference. ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services UK continues to support workplaces across the country with structured routines, trained teams, and consistent standards.

Clean spaces support people. And people keep businesses moving.

All about DEFRA’s Simpler Recycling obligations.

Simpler Recycling is a reform to the recycling system set out by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), which took effect in early 2025. But why did the changes come into effect, and what do they mean for businesses?

This blog post from ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services has all the answers.

Why the changes?

The changes set out by DEFRA enable people across England to recycle the same materials, whether at home, work or school. The intention is to put an end to the confusion over what can and cannot be recycled in different regions.

Who do the regulations affect?

The regulations affect any organisation that produces food waste, which may includes:

  • Workplaces with canteens or kitchens – including offices
  • Retail and supermarkets
  • Food manufacturing
  • Food and Beverage Businesses: Restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars
  • Hospitality
  • Catering and events
  • Educational Facilities: Schools, universities, and hospitals

Even if your business just produces a small amount of food waste, you are still required to separate and properly dispose of it.

When are the changes?

From 31st March 2025, all businesses and non-household premises with ten or more Full Time Employees (FTE) needed to become compliant.

Those with fewer than ten full-time employees have a later deadline of 31st March 2027 for full compliance. However, all businesses are expected to begin planning and implementing the changes at the earliest opportunity.

Hospitals, schools and universities, including Schedule 2 sites (places of worship, penal institutes, charity shops, hostels and public meeting places) will also be affected by Simpler Recycling.

How to stay compliant

To stay compliant, businesses are advised to prepare by familiarising themselves with the regulations and reviewing their waste management processes.

Regulations vary across England, Scotland and Wales, as below:

England

Any waste from business activity should not be placed in domestic waste or recycling receptacles.

Have collections set up for:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Steel and aluminium (cans, foil, and aerosols)
  • Plastics
  • Cartons and Tetra Paks
  • Glass
  • Food waste

Scotland

All organisations must present the following materials for recycling:

  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Plastic
  • Paper
  • Cardboard

Furthermore, most food businesses in urban areas must present food waste separately for collection.

Wales

In Wales, as of April 2024, it has already become law for all businesses, charities and other non-household premises to separate waste for recycling.

Six core waste streams must be segregated, stored and collected separately:

  • Food (for premises producing 5kg+ of food waste per week)
  • Unsold small electrical and electronic equipment (sWEEE)
  • Glass
  • Metal, plastic and cartons.
  • Paper and card
  • Unsold textiles

Next steps

The government is still reviewing elements of this legislation regarding how recyclable materials are collected and mixed and the deadlines for micro-businesses (under 10 FTE), currently set as March 2027.

In the meantime, keep in touch with your current waste collection provider regarding specific requirements for your business and familiarise yourself with the changes your business will have to make to smoothly transition ahead of the deadline.

ServiceMaster Clean is participating in the third annual Forget Me Knot Challenge to support Alzheimer’s Society.

Alzheimer’s is commonly misunderstood as a natural part of ageing.

However, it is a deadly neurological disease that is currently the UK’s biggest killer, estimated to affect 1 in 2 people in the UK in their lifetime.

This year, ServiceMaster brands across the UK have once again partnered with the Alzheimer’s Society to help them provide help and hope to the 900,000+ people living with dementia in the UK.

Throughout 2025, we’re working closely with our friends at the Alzheimer’s Society to raise a further £10,000 as part of our commitment to supporting them in their cause.

And as part of our fundraising commitment, our businesses nationwide are again undertaking the Forget Me Knot Challenge.

But what is the Forget Me Knot Challenge? And how can you get involved?

This blog post has all the details.

What is the Forget Me Knot Challenge?

The Alzheimer’s Society is represented by the forget-me-not flower, long associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia due to its impact on memory loss.

The Forget Me Knot Challenge is a sponsored virtual relay in which staff and owners from our businesses across the UK run, walk, or cycle the equivalent total mileage between each of our businesses, tying them together and raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society: creating the Forget Me Knot.

Would you pass your next CQC audit?

As a care provider, be it a GP Surgery, dentist, care home or private clinic, it is essential that you maintain stringent hygiene standards.

Maintaining a clean environment:

  • Ensures patient and staff safety
  • Prevents and controls infections
  • Reassures patients

But following the update to the UK government’s National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness, care providers must ensure they adhere to specific criteria regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The CQC is an independent regulatory body operating throughout the UK that monitors, inspects, and regulates health and social care providers.

New frameworks – CQC Key Questions and Quality Statements

The new framework employed by the CQC ensures that care providers adhere to standards across five key areas:

  1. Safety
  2. Effectiveness
  3. Care
  4. Responsivity
  5. Leadership

These are known as quality statements. Which the CQC defines as “the commitments that providers, commissioners, and system leaders should live up to.”

To ensure your premises meets safety standards, they must be clean, well-maintained and hygienic.

With employees back in the office, how do you maintain your floors?

We might not think about our floors bearing the brunt of the UK’s changeable temperatures.

But, just like you, your commercial property also feels the chill of winter and highs of summer – particularly the flooring.

Luckily, the experts at ServiceMaster Clean are here with a guide to making your commercial floor maintenance easy.

Hard Surfaces

Many types of tile and hardwood commercial floors can require slightly different cleaning techniques.

However, you should always refer to your flooring manufacturer’s manual and test cleaning solutions in a small, inconspicuous area before starting to avoid costly damages.

When cleaning hardwood floors:

  • Sweep away visible debris to remove larger particles from the surface.
  • Use a semi-acidic floor cleaner or mix vinegar with water to neutralise and dissolve any remaining salt residue.
  • Refer to product instructions for dilution ratios.
  • Once the salt residue is suspended in the cleaner, use a mop to absorb the liquid.
  • If your floor’s finish has been damaged, use a stripper solution to remove it.
  • Apply the solution and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Add more as needed.
  • Refer to the specific stripping product’s label for exact instructions.

Safety Tip: Use floor fans and open windows to improve ventilation when working with harsh chemicals.

  • Use a scrubber to agitate the surface and strip the remaining finish.
  • Mop the floor with clean water to remove lingering chemicals from the cleaner and stripping solution.
  • Let the floor dry completely.
  • Apply two coats of sealing and a few fresh coats of finish for a floor that looks as good as new.

Soft Surfaces

Soft surfaces are equally affected by salt, mud, and melting snow or ice – if not more so.

The salt residue will leave a characteristic white and powdery residue on carpet surfaces, while chemicals can soak deep into the fibres and padding.

If water damage goes untreated, mould and mildew can grow and spread, leading to long-term issues.

How to Clean Commercial Carpets

Add absorbent doormats, umbrella stands and coat racks to your building’s entrance to reduce the amount of water that can reach your carpeted areas during the winter.

In warmer weather, follow these steps to clean your carpets.

  • Vacuum visible dirt particles and debris.
  • Use water and a residue-removing cleaning solution.
  • Let the solution soak into the carpet for approximately 15 minutes. Refer to the specific product for dilution ratios.
  • Use a wet vacuum to remove the solution, oils and dissolved residue.
  • Rinse with clean water and suction it out with a wet vacuum. You may find that you need to repeat steps 2-4 depending on the amount of damage.
  • Use carpet fans to dry the floor.

Best practices to keep your operating room safe and sterile.

At any medical facility, patient safety is a top priority.

So, operating rooms must be kept sterile to keep them safe throughout any procedure.

While you’re undoubtedly aware of the importance of cleaning the operating room before and after every surgery, your cleaning checklist might overlook some areas that can harbour dirt, dust and pathogens.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we have over 60 years of experience as a leader in the cleaning industry, so we know the importance of proper and professional healthcare cleaning.

We also know how difficult it can be to maintain this environment on top of everything else you have to do in any medical facility, especially amidst the ongoing stream of patients.

That’s why we’ve put together this list of five common trouble spots that we’ve observed when cleaning operating rooms, that are important to keep in mind to help reduce the risk of infection.

  1. Behind Equipment and Furnishings

You probably wipe down used equipment and furnishings like tables, carts, and stools after surgery to rid them of germs.

However, it’s also important to move these items so that you can clean underneath and behind them too.

When cleaning your operating room, make sure you pull furniture and equipment away from the wall so that you can sweep and mop behind these items.

Dust and debris also often collect in corners and underneath equipment, where they can harbour infectious agents.

Take the time to thoroughly clean behind these items to eliminate build-up that would reduce the sterility of your operating environment.

  1. Floors

Surfaces like the operating table might seem like the most germ-prone spots in your operating room, but the floors aren’t far behind. Bodily fluids and other substances can land on the floor during surgery, requiring a prompt clean-up.

There are approved methods and cleaning standards that any healthcare facility in the UK must follow, as set out by The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA). This includes cleaning bodily fluids or blood from the floor.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we are constantly updating our policies and practices in line with these standards. Through regular audits, we also make sure that the right channels stay open between our staff and clients so that the facilities under our care maintain the best cleanliness and hygiene standards.

  1. Ceilings

It would be easy to assume the ceiling in your operating room is always going to stay untouched and spotless. However, ceilings can still harbour germs, dust and build-up.

This accumulated debris can eventually fall, posing a serious health risk during a procedure.

To mitigate this risk, ensure you regularly clean the ceiling and light fittings in your operating room.

The best way to do this is to use a microfibre cloth to easily wipe away any dust.

You should also take the opportunity to inspect the ceiling area for any spots that require more intensive clean-up and disinfection.

  1. Cabinets

As a standard practice, you may already wipe down the outside of the cabinets.

However, be sure not to overlook the interior, where germs can easily lurk until they are introduced into the room. (Think of how many hands reach into those cabinets during a given procedure!)

Always wipe down the cabinet shelves, handles and contents to minimise the spread of harmful agents during and after an operation.

  1. Biohazard Waste Bins

The biohazard waste bin in your operating room allows you to dispose of biohazard waste safely and properly. But even if your waste has been properly bagged and disposed of, the bin itself can be a hot spot for pathogens.

Take the time to properly disinfect all biohazard containers and waste bins to ensure that any medical waste doesn’t spread infectious diseases around your healthcare facility.

Is your workspace looking a little cluttered?

Whether in the office or working from home, your desk is the all-important hub of your work life.

So, it must be kept clean.

There are multiple reasons, beyond just aesthetic function. Some may even surprise you.

Here are our top 5 reasons why you should have a clean desk.

1. Health

Your desk is dirtier than you think, trust us.

According to OctoClean, the average desk can host more bacteria than a toilet seat. It’s 4000 times dirtier on average, in fact.

This is usually due to people eating at their desks and not cleaning up afterwards, so make sure you do!

Cleaning your desk by wiping it down and ensuring frequently used items such as your keyboard and mouse are cleaned and sanitised regularly will help stop the spread of germs and illness to you and your employees in the office.

2. Boost productivity

Nobody wants a cluttered workspace, do they? It’s been proven that a cluttered workspace can hurt productivity.

Keeping your desk organised and in the same place all the time will ensure you’ve made this a habit, meaning you’ll do it without thinking, giving your brain more valuable thinking time! Therefore, I am a lot more productive at work.

3. Aiding with stress

Don’t put more stress on yourself than you need to.

Similar to affecting your productivity a cluttered and dirty desk can increase stress by making it increasingly difficult to concentrate on your current task. Just take a quick few minutes every evening before you finish to clean and tidy your desk so you arrive the next morning in a welcoming environment.

4. First impressions count

Keeping your desk and the rest of the office is important to give your clients or guests the best first impression of your company.

Enforce a clean desk policy in your offices to ensure a good first impression is always accomplished.

5. Improved security

Don’t leave your desk cluttered, you could leave client information on the desk without knowing.

Again, a clean desk policy will ensure all staff keep their desk tidy and put all important documents away at the end of each day, hence improving your office security.
