The award-winning team at ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland had a busy November this year, from new additions to the team to extensive charity work.

Here’s your run-down of everything they’ve been up to.

Guided Walk With Berkshire Vision

The team has continued working with the local charity Berkshire Vision, which provides practical and friendly support, sports, and activities to visually impaired children and adults and their families in Berkshire.

The team had the pleasure of helping them out by guiding people with vision impairment on a beautiful walk around the lakes in Thatcham.

Team members Juanita and Alexei had an enjoyable afternoon chatting to some fascinating people as we strolled by the lakes, with a well-earned cuppa afterwards.

Over £500 Raised for Sebastian’s Action Trust

Team ServiceMaster by Deeland also completed the 100-mile challenge on behalf of Sebastian’s Action Trust.

Throughout October, they managed a staggering 775 miles between them, raising £540 for this very worthwhile cause.

Well done to all of the team, and a huge thank you to everyone who donated!

Talking Newspaper Donation

The team were very pleased to meet Peter Dann of Kennet Cassette, a local charity that gives valuable support to thosewith vision impairment by providing them with free USB memory sticks with a selection of articles read out from the Newbury Weekly News.

Run entirely by volunteers for nearly 40 years, this gives blind and visually impaired people access to their local paper, keeping them in touch and up to date.

The team at ServiceMaster by Deeland were happy to donate 50 USB memory sticks to Peter Dann, their founder, and chat with him about the charity, which helps around 70 listeners a week in and around Newbury.

All Electric Van

The team were also thrilled to welcome to their expansive vehicle fleet, their first all-electric van, furthering their commitment to green cleaning and working environmentally-consciously.

Meet ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland, finalists in this year’s BFA HSBC British Franchise Awards.

Three cheers for ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland!

The business, which provides expert contract cleaning services across various sectors in Newbury and the surrounding areas, has been shortlisted for the HSBC Best in Class: Multi-Unit Multi-Brand award at the BFA HSBC British Franchise Awards 2024.

Here’s everything you need to know about them.

Who are ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland?

Deeland Limited has been operating its ServiceMaster franchise for over 30 years.

Known today as ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland, its multi-brand cleaning divisions service six business sectors across four ServiceMaster UK brands:

  • Commercial Businesses
  • Schools & Colleges
  • Domestic Homes
  • Healthcare & Medical Centres
  • Housing Associations & Property Management
  • Fire & Flood Restoration

These are carried out across licences for various brands: ServiceMaster Clean’s Residential and Commercial upholstery and carpet cleaning, Contract Services office cleaning and ServiceMaster Restore’s disaster restoration brand.

ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland’s franchise area covers most of Southern England across 61 franchise licences. Their central management support office and warehouse is in Newbury, with other offices and premises in Bristol, Gloucester and Reading.

Deeland: A History

The business was started by Contract Services franchisee Nick Dee Shapland in 1991 as a sole trader in Newbury and Reading.

Nick Dee Shelpland with his first branded van in 1991

In 2021 it became an Employee Ownership Trust, whereby 80% of the company shares are held in trust on behalf of the employees.

This structurally ensures that their staff can contribute to ideas within the company and benefit from a shareholder distribution scheme.

Not only does this result in greater longevity and expertise amongst their team, but it also ensures that staff are actively invested in the success and growth of the business and go ‘above and beyond’ in providing excellent customer service with a real financial motivation to achieve growth.

The business achieved rapid growth over the first ten years through a large portfolio that, at the time, included a large cleaning contract with Vodafone, which operated from 37 buildings in Newbury.

This growth enabled Deeland Limited to expand its ServiceMaster Clean franchise operations, acquiring new ServiceMaster Brand Licenses and new territories, expanding to include licences such as Residential Services and Fire and Flood Restoration.

The business now serves multiple clients with over 400 staff and a fleet of 70 vans, making them the largest ServiceMaster Clean franchise in the UK.

Management Structure

They are overseen by a centralised Senior Management Team (SMT), which has been in place since 2021 to enable leadership to work on and not just in the business and implement proactive growth plans. The SMT comprises leaders Andre Gottemaker, Jane Paisley and Abbigale May, who collectively have over 54 years of experience within the business.

Left to right: Jane Paisley, Andre Gottemaker, Abbigale May

Leadership from the SMT drive their team to new heights through an excellent training and management structure that ensures their standards are impeccably maintained. This, in turn, means that they can deliver above and beyond the call of duty every time, allowing them significant year-on-year growth.

Culture and Performance

The company culture is based on the 3Ps: Principles, People & Performance.

Their Principles dictate the correct and ethical way in which they operate, they recognise their success depends on their People, so they are highly valued and trained, and they always strive for excellence in their Performance, with fully managed and audited services to help deliver this.

This approach was originally part of ServiceMaster Ltd.’s franchisor philosophy on managing and operating a successful commercial business, demonstrating Deeland’s strong commitment to upholding the core values of the whole brand as part of its culture.

To formalise their investment in their people, they have a Human Resources Department to allow a separate, centrally managed function to manage staff performance, well-being and recruitment.

The SMT has also introduced a Quality Assurance Management Program (QAMP) to focus on company performance.

QAMP ensures scheduled meetings are in place for the year with set agendas to examine and audit KPIs like service delivery, customer service and employee reviews.

This works alongside formalised training processes through a comprehensive induction and training matrix for all staff. This is started on day one of their employment to ensure that high standards are maintained, and contracts are delivered.

These are rigorously upheld in line with ISO, an investment that goes above and beyond the sector’s expectations and affords the business and brands a prestige and quality assurance that means Deeland can win larger and more reputable contracts.

It has the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Accreditation, is externally audited yearly by ISOQAR, and is also a BICSc Accredited Training Centre.

They have also formalised social values, responsibilities, and environmental policies as part of their commitment to their principles. These feed into their company culture as an EOT, demonstrating and living the company ethos.

Three franchise business owners from ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services have risen to the top of the franchising world as finalists in the BFA HSBC UK British Franchise Awards 2024.

Within the world of franchising, the BFA HSBC UK British Franchise Awards are some of the most prestigious awards a franchise business and brand can win.

They celebrate excellence and showcase the innovation, dedication, and positive impacts franchises make across the UK.

In this, its 35th Year, the awards have seen a record number of entrants, with hundreds of businesses across the nation throwing their hats into the ring for consideration from the expert judging panel: spearheaded by the BFA’s Chief Executive, Pip Wilkins and HSBC UK’s Head of Franchising, Gillian Morris.

Despite the competition, not one, not two, but three ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services businesses are among the final shortlist of applicants across three categories.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Manchester – HSBC UK Best in Class Multi-Unit Single Brand Award

The BFA describe the HSBC UK best-in-class multi-unit awards as ‘like no other.’

It recognises business owners who have built empires in franchising.

The judges were looking for ‘a franchisee [who] has a clear passion for business and is a master of managing management teams.’

CJ Micallef is the daughter of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Manchester’s original owners, Sarah and Martin Steinman, who started the business in 1991 and operated out of the conservatory of their family home.

CJ joined the company in 2004 as a Key Account Manager after a career working in leadership roles for companies like Starbucks Coffee.

Today, she is Managing Director, having taken the reigns of the family business.

She has been instrumental in expansion through the growth of the business’s turnover, capacity, and efficiency.

The business boasts one of the ServiceMaster Clean brand’s largest local market shares, achieved through organic and local sales growth, and only eight national accounts, despite only covering one major city and competing with approximately 440 cleaning companies.

In 2019, CJ created a five-year plan to reach a £5 million turnover when turning over £2.5 million.

They have achieved above and beyond their goals and, with a current turnover of £5.2 million, are growing in line with their 37% growth in the last year and consistent growth in previous years.

When they formulated these goals, they were primed for growth but were halted by COVID-19. They have since grown by over £2 million in two years.

They have expanded both licenses to have much greater coverage across Greater Manchester and Cheshire through a fleet of branded vehicles, which have grown by 17 cars in the past 12 months, improving the business’s operational capacity and efficiency and the size of the franchise operation through our market share and brand visibility locally.

The franchise now serves 200 clients across 850 sites in vital markets like offices, schools and housing associations.

ServiceMaster by Deeland – HSBC UK Best in Class Multi-Unit Multi-Brand Award

ServiceMaster by Deeland is also shortlisted in the Best-in-Class Multi-Unit category as a Multi-Branded operation due to the professional residential and commercial carpet and upholstery and disaster restoration services, they provide under the ServiceMaster Restore and ServiceMaster Clean brands alongside their contract cleaning services.

The business was started by Contract Services franchisee Nick Dee Shapland in 1991 as a sole trader in Newbury and Reading.

All this has contributed to their achievements in business success in the wider world and ServiceMaster’s franchise network.

Not only did they achieve their franchisor-set target of 10% growth annually over the last five years, but they also received multiple awards for growth and environmental initiatives.

ServiceMaster Clean AAA – Business Builder Award

After winning big last year by taking home the Franchisee Trailblazer and People’s Choice awards, Siva Kugathas is now shortlisted in the brand new Business Builder category.

This award recognises a franchisee who has purchased a profitable resale business and

is now excelling by executing strategies that elevate it from good to great.

Siva purchased ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Guildford in 2017 as a resale from an existing franchisee.

At the time, the business turned over £50,000. In a matter of years, he has transformed it into a shining star in his multi-million-pound, multi-territory empire: ServiceMaster Clean AAA.

Using the ServiceMaster Clean model and thorough strategies that combat common hurdles in the cleaning industry, Siva has transformed a good business into something great.

He has been ambitious from the start, with an initial goal of creating more job opportunities and rapid growth within the local area.

His practices around employee mentorship, customer satisfaction, ‘celebrity service’ and employing a dedicated sales team allowed him to transform his business into a bastion of success.

Initially doubling the size of his operation in just 18 months, he has also acquired 18 further territories in 7 years to grow to a turnover of £6 million last year.

Now, as a top-performing franchisee, he is committed to exceeding client expectations and driving the business to achieve a target of a £10 million turnover by 2027.

The awards evening

Our business owners and their fellow finalists will now spend the next few months working on the next round of judging before the winners are announced in November at the end of the BFA’s annual conference.

The night will be led by Pip and Gillian, who each had highly complementary words for all of the worthy finalists:

Pip Wilkins said:

“We are delighted to be celebrating our 35th year of the BFA awards this year and as always, another exceptionally difficult round of shortlisting for Gillian and I.

Congratulations to each and every one of you who have made the finals; this is in itself a huge achievement and one you should be extremely proud of. The team and I look forward to seeing you in November.”

Gillian Morris added:

“My heartfelt congratulations to the deserving finalists in this year’s British Franchise Awards.”

“Shortlisting the entries and choosing the finalists is one of the toughest challenges of my year but it’s one I love.”

“I was truly inspired by the brilliant businesses amongst this year’s entrants and the finalists really do represent the best of British franchising.”

ServiceMaster Clean sponsors two rugby clubs in Newbury and Swindon with kits and pitch-side signage.

The team at ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland are proud to announce that they are sponsors of the local Swindon Supermarine RFC under 12s and Newbury RFC rugby teams.

 Managing Director Andre Gottemaker said,

“We have always believed it’s important to give back to the local community, and supporting local sports teams is a great way to do this.  Both clubs also have vibrant youth teams, and it’s fantastic to be a part of encouraging young people to get into sport.”

Andre visited the Supermarine U12s on Sunday at their match against Cirencester to present the team with their new shirts and shorts.

The constant rain throughout the morning made for a very muddy experience but didn’t dim the excitement of having a brand-new kit to play in.

After the kit was presented, the boys had great fun chasing Andre across the pitch to get him as muddy as possible!

The new signage among the action!

Commenting on the sponsorships, the Deeland team said:

“We are proud to be associated with the [U12] club.  [We’re] wishing them a successful season with lots more mud, fun and excellent rugby!”

“We are also delighted to continue our sponsorship of Newbury Rugby Club this season.

It’s great to hear about the growth in participation, especially amongst the ladies and youth teams. The club is thriving, and we’re looking forward to some great matches!”

ServiceMaster Clean Newbury had a very successful evening recently at the ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Summer Summit, receiving two awards for growth.

At ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services, we always strive to go above and beyond in all we do, whether it’s exceeding our client’s expectations, nurturing relationships with our staff and customers or developing a thriving franchise network.

Earlier this month, we celebrated many of our franchise business owners who go above and beyond as part of our annual conference, the ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Summer Summit.

This fantastic day allowed our franchisees from across the UK to come together with staff from our head office and event sponsors from different companies to network, develop, and celebrate their businesses.

Awards for ServiceMaster Clean Newbury

To close the day, a black-tie awards evening saw various franchisees awarded for their recent achievements and contributions to our network and the cleaning industry.

Amongst the winners was ServiceMaster Clean Newbury, who last year won the coveted North Star Invest Award, and this year won multiple awards for growth in the business.

The Awards Won

These included two awards for achieving exceptional business growth milestones. The first was for growth of over £500,000 in one year, and the second was for over £1 million growth over five years.

Since becoming an EOT in 2021 and making the staff the owners, ServiceMaster Newbury has focused on growth by working hard to retain its existing clients and secure new ones whilst continuing to deliver the same high standards their clients expect and deserve.

With the employees owning the majority of shares in the company, they are incredibly motivated to go above and beyond in the services they provide for their customers.

This desire to grow and develop the business has included an emphasis on sales and a particular effort to nurture and develop staff talent in sales-oriented roles.

The business has also started to access new, high-value markets and made a particular effort to listen to customer needs. This strategy’s benefits are now paying off, as demonstrated by these two awards for growth.

Business Services Director Jane Paisley said

“If everyone is committed to delivering the best service, maintaining professional standards, and working together to achieve this, a business can develop and grow.”

“Our continued growth will provide opportunities for investment in our people, equipment, green initiatives and the wider community.”

“Winning these awards is the culmination of everyone’s hard work over the past five years. It Is wonderful to have this hard work recognised by the presentation of these two awards at the CS Summer Summit 2023.”

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Newbury has won the North Star Invest award at this year’s ‘ServiceMaster Live!’ event.

This May, our long-anticipated ServiceMaster Live event, which is a gathering of franchisees from across the ServiceMaster UK brand family – saw franchisees and their teams recognised for their hard work in customer service, sales, and marketing efforts, resilience, growth and more over the past year. The awards ceremony, which took place at the close of a jam-packed day full of connections, networking and inspiring presentations, saw ServiceMaster Clean Newbury win the highly coveted North Star Invest award for investments in their business and the local community.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Newbury was owned and managed by Nick Dee Shapland for 30 years, during which time he established a growing community of staff and clients who relied upon and delivered his trademark professional and bespoke contract cleaning services. Originally, ServiceMaster Clean Newbury solely provided commercial cleaning services in the Newbury area, but over their three decades of business, their territory has grown to cover not only Reading & Newbury but North Hampshire, Swindon, Newbury, Oxfordshire and much of Gloucestershire. This is a truly impressive size for a franchise business, and they are equipped to reflect this. With a fleet of over 60 vehicles and a staff of over 350 people!

After Nick retired in 2021, he transferred ownership of his business to his employees in an Employee Ownership Trust. And, as Nick said back in 2021, this move enabled him to “place the future of the business in the hands of the people who have helped it grow over the last 10 years”

Now that team has achieved new heights for their investment by continuing to show their involvement in their community through brilliant work with multiple charities in the Newbury area – and earning them the coveted North Star Invest Award. The Newbury team endeavour to support three main charities we support each year. This year, this has been Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), through staff completing the London Bridge walk in June, Macmillan coffee mornings, and Children in Need. Last year, the team raised over £1500 for their charities, and hope to exceed this effort this year through events like the London Bridge Walk and team donations.

At its heart, ServiceMaster Clean Newbury is about community, and Victoria Tayler, Marketing Manager for ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services says that this made them the clear choice as the winners of the North Star Invest award this year. “This is a fantastic award to achieve, it is so pleasing to see one of our businesses giving so much back to their community, she says.

“It is easy as a business owner to get bogged down with the day-to-day stuff but the giving back is so valuable to those to whom they have contributed. This really embodies the ServiceMaster ethos of going Above and Beyond.”

Jane Paisley, on behalf of EOT and the Newbury team, says, “We were very proud to receive the North Star Investment award for 2021! We moved to an Employment ownership Trust in June 2021 and as a company, we have always tried to help and support local events and help the community and if staff have asked for support for their local schools or fund-raising activities.

Our new aim is to continue to support our three main charities CRY, Macmillan and Children in need and then support local charities and fundraising in Newbury but, we would also like to reach out further to our surrounding areas and we have asked [our] staff if there are any charities or events to which they belong to that we can support.   We feel it is important to show support where we can to staff and the local community to which they are also involved, it makes staff feel proud to be part of the ServiceMaster brand.”

Client Problem:

At the beginning of the Covid Pandemic the customer had parted ways with their cleaning contractor. When the team were looking to go back to Office working, they required a reliable, efficient & local cleaning company. Initially the client invited 3 companies to quote.

How we helped

We met with the client the same day to carry out a survey and discuss the clients needs.

Along with daily office cleaning, they required a deep clean of all areas, as the Office had been closed for over 12 months, this also included a full carpet clean.

We supplied a quotation the following day for all services.

The client swiftly accepted our quotation. One of the main reasons being we are a local company, with good references.

We then mobilised our team – carrying out the deep clean, and carpet clean prior to the contract going live.

Our services along the side of the regular schedule, includes a daily clean of all high touch points and we have also carried out an infection control clean for the client after a staff member tested positive for Covid.

The benefit

Our Field Service Supervisor carries out regular site visits, along with a monthly Service Review with the client either face to face or via teams – depending on requirements

6 months in the client is happy and will be looking to increase our services further when their second Office re-opens in 2022
