ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland Shortlisted for three Thames Valley Business and Community Awards

ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland has been shortlisted for three prestigious awards for employer advocacy, leadership and business excellence.

ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland is starting the year in style!

After achieving Great British Franchisee status and becoming finalists in the HSBC UK BFA British Franchise Awards last year, the cleaning experts have been shortlisted for three Thames Valley Business Community Awards.

This blog post has all the details.

Thames Valley Business and Community Awards

The Thames Valley Business and Community Awards were launched in 2018 by The Great British Expos to celebrate the achievements, resilience, innovation, and creativity of the region’s business community.

Since its inception in 2013, The Great British Expos have supported over 65,000 UK SMEs and recognised entrepreneurs, businesses, charities, and community figures from the area who are transforming their industries, the economy, and society.

The Categories

ServiceMaster Clean has been shortlisted for three categories, spotlighting various ways they achieve excellence.

Employer of the Year

This award recognises an employer who looks after their people by creating an outstanding workplace based on values that have led to a committed, effective and motivated workforce.

ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland began as a one-man and van operation in 1991. Achieving rapid growth over the first ten years enabled them to expand their ServiceMaster Clean franchise operations and acquire new ServiceMaster brand licenses and new territories, expanding to include licences in residential carpet and upholstery cleaning and disaster restoration services.

The business now serves multiple clients with over 400 staff and a fleet of over 70 vehicles.

In 2021, they became an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), whereby 80% of the company shares are held in trust on behalf of their employees.

This structurally ensures that staff can contribute to ideas within the company and benefit from a shareholder distribution scheme.

Not only does this result in greater longevity and expertise amongst the team, but it also ensures that staff are actively invested in the success and growth of the business and go above and beyond in providing excellent customer service with a real financial motivation to achieve growth.

They have also formalised their training process through a comprehensive induction and training matrix conducted for all staff.  This commences on the first day of their employment and helps to ensure the maintenance of high standards.

The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) is widely considered to be the industry’s gold standard. ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland has been a proud member since 2016 and BICSc is fundamental to how their business operates and ensures delivery of exemplary cleaning and hygiene standards.

Business Leader of the Year

The Leader of the Year award will reward outstanding contributions to business and industry through years of dedication and hard work by creating jobs, employment and growth inspiring others to follow suit while adapting, diversifying and contributing to the community.

As ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland has grown, they have formalised social values, responsibilities, and environmental policies as part of their commitment to their principles. These feed into their company culture as an EOT, demonstrating and living the company ethos.

With principles at the heart of their culture, a desire to ‘give back’ to the community wherever possible is part of the company’s values.

While the business has always given back through donations, last year, they began to work more actively within community projects by dedicating time to local initiatives, ensuring the company culture is not just a set of words in a corporate document but something that they discuss, live and enact daily with more ‘hands-on’ help.

In 2023, they launched their Social Value Month, dedicating every August to work with a local charity with staff providing hands-on help. In 2023, this began with Sebastian’s Action Trust – which delivers respite care for the families of children with life-limiting illnesses.

Deeland also works closely with several housing association clients and has been proud to support their various community initiatives. Just last year, they donated two benches to Harvey’s Field, a retirement housing complex in Overton alongside donations to charities, they are the first supplier to contribute to a client’s Match My Project initiative, donating office items to a project registered under this housing association’s scheme. In addition, every year a donation is made to CRY, Children in Need and Macmillan Cancer Support.

They place a high value on their people and their growth and development, and staff have a real voice in how the company is run.

As part of their structure as an EOT, this means staff tend to stay longer and ‘go the extra mile’ in service delivery, with pride in what they do.

Their principles give ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland a strong ethos, not just in a desire to always ‘do the right thing’, but also by placing community at the heart of their activities, with a desire to give back wherever possible.

Extending this over the last year with ‘hands-on’ help, staff spent company time on various charitable initiatives to help their culture become part of the day-to-day ethos in and around the office.

Getting out to help in various ways on company time has motivated staff and left them feeling good about the difference they have made.  Furthermore, as most of their community initiatives are taken from staff and client suggestions, this has helped to ensure that their efforts usually have a personal association and resonate internally and externally.

This means that their company culture is part of how they feel, communicate and behave towards each other and their clients in and around the business. It is more than a set of corporate jargon and helps to inform their daily actions.
