Food Waste Regulation Changes for Businesses – March 2025
All you need to know about the changes to Food Waste Regulation for March 2025.
Is your business prepared for DEFRA’s new recycling obligations for 2025?
As part of the government’s Simpler Recycling reforms, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) will implement new waste regulations for businesses in March 2025.
Here’s everything you need to know to get set for the new food waste regulation changes, including:
- What are the changes being made to Food Waste Regulations?
- Why are the changes being made?
- What businesses are affected?
What are the changes being made to Food Waste Regulations?
The food waste changes mean affected businesses must establish individual food waste collection, ensuring it is segregated from general waste collections, and, as with the other changes, the new law comes into effect at the end of March 2025.
Why are the changes being made?
As with the other changes being made as part of Simpler Recycling, the aim is to streamline the recycling process by eliminating confusion around what can be recycled – specifically regarding which bins are used for different waste types.
This aims to improve recycling rates across the UK by making it simpler and eliminating barriers to action.
What businesses are affected?
Unlike some other Simpler Recycling regulations, the new food waste legislation only impacts businesses in England.
It will be mandatory for all non-household municipal premises in England, excluding businesses with fewer than ten full-time employees.
