ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland, one of the largest ServiceMaster Clean franchises in the UK, has closed the year by sharing how its team supported local causes and communities over the past 12 months. The business operates across Southern England and employs nearly 500 people, with a fleet of more than 70 vans delivering residential and commercial cleaning services and restoration work. The company is an Employee Ownership Trust, meaning the people who work there have a direct stake in its success.

Season of Giving

Over the festive season the team held its annual Christmas Jumper Day, inviting staff to wear festive jumpers at the office to raise funds for Save the Children. The initiative brought the team together and raised valuable funds while spreading seasonal cheer.

Alongside this, the company’s ‘Giving Tree’ campaign encouraged staff to donate gifts and essentials for a local charity, Loose Ends in Newbury. The Giving Tree display in the ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland office became a focal point for staff generosity. After the tree was filled, team members delivered the donations directly to Loose Ends, supporting people in need in the local area.

Making a Local Impact

To highlight the impact of these efforts and a range of other charitable activities throughout the year, the business produced a short Christmas video titled The Joy of Giving. The video looks back on initiatives where staff gave their time, resources and support to community causes. You can view it here.

These community and charity efforts sit alongside the company’s everyday work and long-standing support for local groups and clubs. ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland has a history of backing sports teams, schools, and fundraising events in its region.

The festive activities are part of a broader culture of care and community engagement at ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland, driven by its employee-owned structure and local focus. The business aims to deliver high quality cleaning and restoration services, while also playing a positive role in the places where its staff live and work.

We are thrilled to announce that ServiceMaster Office Cleaning Swansea are supporting Alzheimer’s Society throughout 2025 with a series of fundraising efforts.

Our Pledge

As ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services, we have joined forces with the other six brands in the ServiceMaster Brands UK family to support Alzheimer’s Society as ServiceMaster Ltd.’s charity of the year and have pledged to raise £10,000 throughout 2025. As part of that network, our team at ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Swansea have actively taken on the challenge to help contribute towards the £10,000 total and have fully embraced all that the Forget Me Knot challenge has had to offer, not only for the charitable impact, but also to support employee togetherness, wellbeing and promote a real team spirit across all areas of the business.

Forget Me Knot Challenge

This year, the challenge has been undertaken by all ServiceMaster UK Brands and was held over the summer months, during the blooming period of the Forget Me Not flower, which is symbolic to the Alzheimer’s Society due to its connections to memory loss, which is one of the biggest symptoms of the disease.

Our Impact: The challenge consists of a sponsored virtual relay event where all of our teams across the UK either run, walk or cycle to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. Here at ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Swansea, we’ve been committed to making an impact and supporting at a local level. Our fundraising efforts have seen us contribute 15% of the total raised so far across all brands, and our total steps have equated to a whopping 2103.25 miles, which is the same as walking for 29 days non-stop. We are proud of our efforts and are pleased that our £420 raised through sponsored walks (during the time of this challenge) organised by the local teams have gone towards helping the greater cause.  Director Jonathan Gethin says:

As a team, we set out the goal of achieving four million steps at the start of this challenge- which we’re pleased to have succeeded as the challenge came to an end. There were 7 team members that were pivotal to our overall contribution to the ServiceMaster-wide challenge. With an internal leaderboard, this kept the healthy competition amongst the teams, with one team member hitting 33,000 steps in just one day!

Our Contract Manager, Sharon won our local office challenge, recording over 750,000 solo steps within this period. Jayne Gethin, Managing Director came second overall and was immensely proud of her efforts:

“I am very proud of the steps walked by the whole team and chuffed that I came second overall, it shows us oldies can keep up with the young ones if we really want to! Although my Labrador Cassie has enjoyed it more,”

Why Alzheimer’s Society?

As a business that cares, we are committed to helping them provide help and hope to the 900,000+ people living with dementia in the UK. Alzheimer’s is commonly misunderstood as part of getting older.

However, it is a deadly neurological disease that is currently the UK’s biggest killer, estimated to affect 1 in 2 people in the UK in their lifetime. As part of our commitment to raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society, we will be following in the footsteps of one of our sister brands, Merry Maids UK, in undertaking the nationwide Forget Me Knot Challenge.

Jonathan, our Director, adds:

“Alzheimer’s Society is a great charity, and we, as a team, are extremely proud of the challenge and how the team embraced it. As a team, we are proud to have donated £420.65 to link to our 4,206,517 overall steps. We know that this money and the money raised by ServiceMaster Brands UK will go a long way to support those who need it.”

As a brand and business, we will endeavour to raise more of Alzheimer’s Society this year, so keep your eyes peeled for more developments throughout the year.

ServiceMaster Clean AAA sponsors SME Surrey Business Awards, recognising local entrepreneurial excellence.

It’s fair to say ServiceMaster Clean AAA have been to a decent share of awards ceremonies.

As recipients of multiple prestigious awards from the European Franchise Federation’s Franchisee of the Year 2024 to Cleaning Company of the Year, and Industry Eagle Awards, the business turned its attention to the other side of the stage recently as sponsors of the SME Surrey Business Awards 2025.

This blog post has all the details.

The SME Surrey Business Awards

The SME Surrey Business Awards recognise industrious, hardworking and enterprising SMEs in Surrey. Made up of twenty categories from business excellence to CSR and community activity, growth, and digital innovation, there is something that allows any successful business in Surrey to be recognised for its efforts.

As multiple-time winners of the SME Surrey Business Awards for many years running, ServiceMaster Clean AAA has stepped up as the sponsor in association with the awards over the last few years, joining the judging panel and, speaking at, and sponsoring the ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA Business Person of the Year and Service Excellence awards to recognise how local SMEs are going above and beyond.

They were also joined by ServiceMaster Brands UK Managing Director, Alan Lewin and ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Brand Leader, Guy Strang, who each sat on the judging panel and lent their wealth of expertise to the judging process to help recognise the eighteen winners.

A process that was a great honour, says Siva Kugathas, ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services AAA owner:

“It’s been a real pleasure to be a judge and sponsor for the SME Surrey Business Awards again this year. As someone who has been on the other side of the process many times, seeing behind the curtain and getting a glimpse of all the up-and-coming talent in the area over the last few years has been a real source of inspiration and pride. My heartfelt congratulations to all of the winners and deserving finalists. We hope to see many of you again next year!”

ServiceMaster Clean AAA and ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland have been recognised for their dedication to environmental initiatives with Capital Fleet Solutions’ North Star Invest in the Future Awards.

At ServiceMaster Clean, many of our businesses work hard to do their bit to minimise the impact of their operations on the environment.

Two of these businesses, ServiceMaster Clean AAA and ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland, were recognised with Capital Fleet Solutions’ North Star Invest in the Future Awards for going above their commitment to greener cleaning and business practices at the ServiceMaster Thrive in 2025 conference and gala evening.

ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland – Best Environmental Initiatives

From innovative ideas to thoughtful changes, ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland have demonstrated exceptional commitment and action that’s not only driven environmental change but set a powerful example for the whole brand.

Collecting the award on behalf of the business, Jane Paisley says they were motivated to start looking into being more environmentally friendly because it means a great deal to their clients.

“It’s a great way to show our clients that we’re trying our best to be part of a positive change and share that we are doing our bit to try by changing what we can influence, like washing and reusing materials, deploying electric cars and vans and using eco-friendly products where we can.“

Carbon Neutral Award

This award recognises ServiceMaster Clean AAA as a truly forward-thinking business, one that has made carbon neutrality not just a goal, but a reality.

It celebrates their leadership in sustainability, commitment to environmental responsibility, and the determination to leave a lighter footprint on our planet.

Having taken clear, measurable steps to make this happen through their ServiceMaster Clean AAA Woodland and even becoming certified carbon neutral in 2024, ServiceMaster Clean AAA were the worthy winner!

Collecting the award, owner Siva Kugathas says he was motivated to do so after considering the impacts of climate change on future generations.

“The key part for us is that I have a family, most of the rest of our team as a family, and we want to create a better world for our children and grandchildren and their children and grandchildren.”

ServiceMaster Clean AAA has been recognised for its commitment to its people, from staff to their wider community, through two coveted North Star Invest Awards.

The ServiceMaster Thrive in 2025 conference and gala evening saw Siva Kugathas and his team take home multiple prestigious awards for growth, client satisfaction and employee contributions.

But that’s not all, they also walked away at the end of the night with two prestigious North Star Invest Awards for their support and investment in their stakeholders and their well-being.

A Great Place to Work

This award honours businesses that truly prioritise their people by putting meaningful initiatives in place to strengthen engagement, boost staff retention, and create an environment where their team feel supported and motivated. These efforts lay the foundation for long-term success and help maintain a competitive edge in the local market.

As this year’s winners, ServiceMaster Clean AAA has shown exactly what that looks like in action to create a great place to work. From team outings to build a stronger work culture to sponsoring employees in developing their skills in any subject or area of personal development they choose, they’ve built a culture where achievement is celebrated, and teamwork thrives, resulting in a committed, high-performing team that delivers consistent results.

Collecting the award on behalf of the business was Operations Support Manager Jibu Sahadevan Sukritha, who fittingly provides a key example of the business’s support for its people, as he was sponsored by the company to work in the UK when he first started, and the company paid for him to come to the UK and took care of all his legal proceedings.

He testified upon receiving the award how well-deserved the award was, saying:

“It’s like a second home for me, from the team, our development and all my colleagues, everything.”

Giving Back to the Community

This award recognised ServiceMaster Clean AAA as a business that embodies the spirit of giving back. They give not only locally but also internationally. From supporting local charity events and making generous financial contributions to backing team members in their fundraising efforts and engaging in international initiatives, their impact is both far-reaching and deeply personal.

“ Giving back to the community is important to me. I think personally, to me, it’s in my DNA. That’s how I’ve been brought up, and that’s the way I want my company to be,” said Siva upon collecting his award.

“We split three ways on who we support. One is the local people in need: we put homeless people into their own homes to live in partnership with our local YMCA, and I’m very, very proud of that. That’s the thing that gives me the most satisfaction about our community activity, putting those people from the street into accommodation and sheltering them, giving them food, giving them clothing, and giving them the security and getting them off the street.”

“We provide various things to our staff as well, to help, educate and support them. And also recently, as of two years ago, we started to look after the environment, and that’s very close to my heart.”

ServiceMaster Clean North East owner, Chris Blewitt, wins North Star Invest Award for Best Support to Peers.

Chris Blewitt, the owner of ServiceMaster Clean North East, was one of many exceptional franchisees to take home an award at the ServiceMaster Thrive in 2025 conference and gala evening.

However, alongside winning both growth and customer satisfaction awards, Chris was also the sole recipient of the prestigious North Star Invest Award for Best Support to Peers.

Smells like Team Spirit

The special Best Support to Peers Award was inspired and nominated by a fellow franchise partner in recognition of outstanding support from Chris, who supported them with operations and software by allowing them to visit his business and learn everything they needed to know.

Chris’s contributions have made a remarkable difference, driving real, positive change and helping steer the business towards stronger growth and success. Their generosity with time, knowledge, and expertise truly exemplifies the spirit of partnership we value so highly at ServiceMaster Clean.

Collecting his award alongside his daughter, Jessica, Chris reflected on the changes in his business that have supported the wider brand and how this represents what he first loved about the franchise business model:

“Going back to when we first got the business, we bought into the concept of franchising as different to other business formats in that it’s about having a support network. We’ve learned a lot from people, particularly when we first started, and now we try and give back to other people,” he says.

”Some of the systems that we’ve implemented in our business have been held up as best practice, so we’ve had visits from different people to share some of those things and I think some of the work at Head Office is also based on what we’ve been doing, so that, that gives us a tremendous amount of satisfaction.”

We are a really strong team, so I would like to thank everyone: Rachel Lee, Jackie, Monica, Kayla, and the 164 cleaners and workers who are helping us. ServiceMaster Clean AAA’s Anka Bober and Wendy Dutton have been awarded for their commitment to excellence with prestigious awards.

Two members of the team from ServiceMaster Clean AAA, Area Manager for Watford, Luton, Colchester and Ipswich, Anka Bober and Regional Manager for York and East Lancashire, Wendy Dutton, have taken home the coveted Employees’ Choice and Above and Beyond awards at the ServiceMaster Thrive in 2025 conference and gala evening.

Anka Boba – Employee’s Choice Winner

This is an extra special award, even amongst the many prestigious awards at the gala, as the winner was chosen and voted for by their colleagues, and so is decided by the people who know them the best.

In Anka, her colleagues recognised a drive to continually stand out for her outstanding performance, unwavering commitment, and constant support to those around her. She leads by example, offering help without hesitation, gets involved and brings positivity into every space she works in, and it was clear from the sheer volume of nominations she received just how valued Anka is by her team.

Anka, whose award came just in time to celebrate her birthday, says she was overwhelmed by the support from her peers.

“Oh wow, this is heavy, my hands are literally shaking,” she said, collecting the award.

“It means so much to have the appreciation of my colleagues, and without them, I would not be able to win this. It was my birthday yesterday, so I definitely will celebrate with my guys, and obviously, this means a lot, so I think the drinks will be on me tonight!”

Wendy Dutton – Above and Beyond Award Winner

This award, as presented and sponsored by Capital Fleet Solutions, recognises an employee who fully embodies the ethos of what it means to be part of the ServiceMaster Clean team. Going above and beyond is woven into the very DNA of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services. It’s a value we live by—striving to exceed expectations for our stakeholders and encouraging our teams to do the same.

This award honoured Wendy for truly embodying that spirit. No matter the challenge, she rises to meet it with grace, determination, and a can-do attitude—never seeking recognition, but always delivering with pride and dedication.

Proving ever humble as she collected her award, Wendy extended her thanks to her team for allowing her to succeed:

“This is really nice, but I owe it to my team. My team make me who I am today. Without them, I’m nobody. I’m just another person living everyday life, so I am going to dedicate this to my team. It’s for them, not me. I know it’s my name on it, but I’m always there for them and the cleaners.”

“In particular, I’d like to thank Trina Brown, Sam Whittle, Julie Martin, and Ishma, who couldn’t be with us tonight. That’s who this goes to.”

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Manchester’s CJ Micallef shares how she navigates being a woman in business.

CJ Micallef’s parents, Martin and Sarah Steinman, purchased ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Manchester in the UK in early 1991.

Having now mostly stepped away from the business, which they began using their life savings, ServiceMaster Manchester is in the capable hands of CJ, who continues to oversee its growth into a thriving business.

Working regularly on charity initiatives, staff support and development, and having seen the business grow even during some of the toughest COVID-19 restrictions in the UK, CJ is a shining example of an everyday hero.

She says the key to her success is a willingness to get her hands dirty. After joining the business as a cleaner and performing every role within it subsequently, CJ knows what it takes to achieve success and growth in a cleaning business.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, we spoke to CJ about what it means to be a successful woman in business.

What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?

“Believe in yourself, stand strong, and (most importantly) always be yourself.”

“Don’t give up at the first hurdle, there is always another chance or solution. Learn from your mistakes, this ultimately makes you a better manager, leader and person. Always ask for help. No one likes a know-it-all.”

What advice do you have for women looking to grow their own business?

“Trust yourself. You have all the answers within you, make that leap. Why would you work for anyone else if you can do it better? Trust your instincts, all the while making time for you and your family, as the rewards will be greater all around if you make that space for yourself.”

What do you wish more people knew about being a woman in business?

“Women in business are not just one dimensional, we have many skills and talents, and often we give so much more commitment than is recognised as we often put others first.

Sometimes we feel that we are not experienced enough or assertive enough or passionate enough. But we can achieve anything we want and more.

Women can be as fierce as men in the boardroom, whilst remaining empathetic, we provide support and are team players as well as strong leaders. Women should not be overlooked for any position in a business as they often are the backbone. Without women, the world of business would be a very one-sided view with limited vision and perspective.”

What’s an accomplishment or win that makes you especially proud?

“Winning a Great British Franchisee and a BFA HSBC UK British Franchise Award, that’s a big one! We have been in business for 30+ years, and it’s the sort of thing you probably forget about because you do it all the time. This is what you do.

Achieving these things, particularly on the back of the last few years with COVID and the challenges that presented to the sector and our business, is such a wonderful thing to be a part of. These are for everybody. They’re recognised outside of our franchisor by independent people, so that’s an amazing success we’ll benefit from in the future.

We’re seeing more opportunities, more development, and are employing more people.

I can’t think. There are loads!”

What has been a big goal in your career?

“I want us to be a leader in housing and education. I want us to maintain the reputation we already have. But I want people to know when they want a commercial cleaner: ‘Well, let’s ring ServiceMaster.’

And that means employing more people and giving them opportunities. We’ve had cleaners that have worked for us, in terms of our direct operators out in the field, for over 15-20 years. A good majority have been here for 5 to 10 years. So that’s important. For me, it’s about promoting those people and giving them career opportunities. I don’t stand still. There’s no need.”

ServiceMaster Clean AAA owner Siva Kugathas has been recognised as a Global Power Leader at the 2025 Global Business Conclave at the House of Lords.

It continues to be a great year for ServiceMaster Clean AAA owner Siva Kugathas, who has already been awarded Commercial Cleaning Company of the Year at the Corporate LiveWire Global Awards and multiple International Brilliance Awards, but has now reached new heights by being invited to attend and speak at the renowned Global Business Conclave at the House of Lords.

To top it all off, Siva was awarded the Global Transformational Leader Award as part of this year’s Global Power Leader awards.

This blog post has all the details.

Global Power Leader Awards: Global Business Conclave

The Global Power Leader Awards, held annually at the Global Business Conclave, celebrate pioneering brands and leaders who have redefined industries through innovation, sustainability, and ethical leadership.

The World Centre for Research and Consulting (WCRCInt) holds the Conclave in the iconic Peers Room of the House of Lords.

The event was attended by over 150 policymakers, executives and thought leaders from over thirty nations, creating a truly global collaboration and community. This included several notable dignitaries including Lords, Ambassadors, Baronesses, and mayors.

Awardees were selected through WCRCInt’s 8-month independent evaluation framework, designed to ensure objectivity and rigor.

Key stages included Global Nominations. These are open submissions from 150+ countries, vetted for eligibility using data-driven analysis evaluating quantitative metrics regarding sustainability market influence and qualitative insights like stakeholder impact and ethical governance.

Awardees were then peer and expert reviewed under assessment from a 25-member panel of industry leaders, academics, and policymakers and third-party audits, where they were validated by independent auditors to confirm transparency and accuracy.

“Our methodology blends innovation with integrity. Every awardee has demonstrated measurable, scalable impact aligned with global sustainability goals,” emphasised Abhimanyu Ghosh, Group Editorial Director of WCRCINT”.

Siva was invited and awarded as a Global Power Leader for his astonishing business transformation and commitment to his people and community and transforming his business from a single area to a 19-territory empire in just a matter of years, all the while hiring over 900 staff in communities across the UK, fostering local talent, and donating countless hours and pounds to charities and sustainable business practices.

Lord Swraj, Chairperson of Jury, WCRCINT &. Global Industrialist underscored the significance of winning such an award:

“The Global Business Conclave 2025 isn’t just an awards ceremony—it’s a movement. These brands and leaders are architects of a new economic paradigm, where profit and purpose coexist.”

Speaking on Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Change

For Siva, one of the highlights of the event was bringing his family in attendance to the House of Lords to support and cheer him on as he accepted his award.

“I was delighted to be invited and to attend, for both myself and my family and my team, this is all testament to our hard work, and I am very grateful for everyone involved and for receiving this once in a lifetime opportunity and recognition.”

Siva was also asked to speak to the other members of the congregation about his journey, thoughts and advice for creating a business that transforms the world around it for the good of all it touches.

Echoing throughout the hallowed halls, Siva called for the other attendees to recognise the success rooted in a strong work ethic and integrity and values that support a healthy business and conscious, highlighting the importance of corporate responsibility and giving back to the community.

“I arrived in the UK at 18 after leaving my home country of Sri Lanka, which, at the time, was in the midst of a civil war, and worked from the minute I arrived on British shores. As a single father, I was determined to make a name and a better life for myself and my family. I have since raised two well-adjusted children into adulthood and am committed to continuing to set a good example for them and those around me.”

“This has informed my approach to doing business, as I am determined to take care of my community and work hard to engage with it at every level through my business. This philanthropic core is also baked into my culture, wherein there is no question or ulterior rationale for ‘giving back’, as it were. Community is everything. So, of course, giving back is just what you do.”

“When I first began my business, one of my goals was always to be a business that cares. In just eight years, we have made a tangible impact on the people in our communities across the UK. We do this through different initiatives, focusing on areas and topics I and my team are impassioned by, whether supporting educational groups and sessions to help support children in underfunded areas, mentorship of staff, combatting homelessness through continued work with our local YMCA, championing local businesses by sponsoring SME awards and accreditations or bettering the environment. It is the latter, though, which has been a key focus for me in recent years, as clients across the sectors we serve increasingly focus on their environmental impact. In our market, sustainability has become a hot-button topic, but many businesses, despite possibly having the most skin in the game, have been slow on the uptake. In fact, Forbes recently estimated that although 90% of companies agree that sustainability is essential, only 60% have implemented any strategy to improve their practices. It’s almost 10 years since Ray Anderson, Founder of Interface, spoke on environmental corporate responsibility and coined the phrase ‘comply is not a vision’.”

“Together, we can shape a future where our businesses—and the communities they serve—thrive because of our commitment to care, responsibility, and sustainability. I hope you’ll all be a part of this journey with me!”

ServiceMaster by Deeland have been awarded at the prestigious Thames Valley Business and Community Awards as Employee of the Year.

The team at ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland are delighted to have been named Employer of the Year at the Thames Valley Business and Community Awards, where they were three-time finalists.

This blog post has all the details.

Award-Winning Progress

Listed as top three finalists in their two other categories, SME and Business Leader of the Year, the team took home the gold for Employer of the Year, which recognises an employer who looks after their people by creating an outstanding workplace based on values that have led to a committed, effective and motivated workforce.

As winners and top three finalists, the business will also progress to the National Business Awards in June in all three categories they were nominated for.

What makes ServiceMaster by Deeland an award-winning employer?

ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland began as a one-man and van operation in 1991. Achieving rapid growth over the first ten years enabled them to expand their ServiceMaster Clean franchise operations and acquire new ServiceMaster brand licenses and new territories, expanding to include licenses in residential carpet and upholstery cleaning and disaster restoration services.

They now serve multiple clients with over 400 staff and a fleet of over 70 vehicles.

In 2021, they became an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), whereby 80% of the company shares are held in trust on behalf of their employees.

This structurally ensures that staff can contribute to ideas within the company and benefit from a shareholder distribution scheme.

Not only does this result in greater longevity and expertise amongst the team, but it also ensures that staff are actively invested in the success and growth of the business and go above and beyond in providing excellent customer service with a real financial motivation to achieve growth.

They have also formalised their training process through a comprehensive induction and training matrix conducted for all staff.  This commences on the first day of their employment and helps to ensure the maintenance of high standards.

The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) is widely considered to be the industry’s gold standard. ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland has been a proud member since 2016 and BICSc is fundamental to how their business operates and ensures delivery of exemplary cleaning and hygiene standards.
