Our top tips for creating an energy-efficient office.

It takes a lot to run a company, from guts to smarts and plenty of funding.

But, there is also a growing focus on collective responsibility.

Although, with the cost-of-living crisis still taking centre stage in the UK, many are focusing on costs above thoughts of sustainability business models.

In fact, according to Forbes, although 90% of businesses think that sustainability is essential, only 60% of companies have a sustainability strategy in place.

However, energy-efficient office conserves money in more ways than you might think.

Saving energy in the office is one of the easiest ways to save money and support the environment.

In this blog post, see how you can make a difference to our planet and your bottom line with three easy ways to keep your office energy-efficient from ServiceMaster Clean.

Easy Office Energy Saving Tips

  1. Replace your light bulbs.

If your lightbulbs are not energy efficient, replace them with ENERGY STAR®-qualified light bulbs, which include compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

These use about 70% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last longer.

Yes, you read that right – you save money on energy bills and at the store when you go CFL.

While LED lights are even more energy efficient, they tend to be more cost-prohibitive for businesses.

You can encourage employees with desk lamps to use LED lights or calculate whether the longevity of LED lights is worth the initial investment.

Additionally, remind employees to turn off the unused lights in empty rooms.

Furthermore, open blinds and use natural lighting as often as you can during the day to keep energy use down even more.

  1. Turn off computers when not in use.

One of the most commonly missed office energy-saving tips is turning off equipment at the end of the day or during periods of low usage.

During the day, ask employees to use the hibernation feature on their computers if they step away from their desks.

This mode reduces the energy emitted from the monitors and the computer itself.

You can also shut down computers completely before closing each day for more savings.

Remember that even when electronics are off, they use energy if plugged in.

The NRDC reports that this wasted energy adds up to around the amount of electricity produced by 50 large (500-megawatt) power plants yearly!

If your office is going on a lengthy holiday break, unplug energy-sucking equipment like printers, microwaves, coffee machines, vending machines, lights and more.

  1. Go paperless as often as you can.

Set up systems that allow employees to work electronically as often as possible and only print things when necessary.

This will help prolong the life of your printer, paper and ink/toner and also help reduce your energy costs and protect against deforestation in one fell swoop.

If you must print a document, print it in black and white.

That way, you save money on printer ink or toner and help keep excess consumables, including toner cartridges, from filling landfills.

Also, consider using copy paper with the highest percentage of recycled paper content.

You can also utilize local recycling services for your waste paper.

The future is now.

If you’re ready to make these three easy energy-saving changes, there’s no better time to start than now.

Gather your staff to explain the easy ways to keep your office energy-efficient

Soon, the savings accumulate, and you’ll feel good knowing your business is acting as a responsible corporate citizen.

ServiceMaster Clean AAA is kicking off 2024 with a bang.

Continuing their winning streak after winning two awards at the BFA HSBC British Franchise Awards,  being made a three-time finalist in the Customer Centricity World Series, and winning big at the UK Business Awards 2023, ServiceMaster Clean AAA has won a total of four awards at the International Brilliance Awards 2024.

About the International Brilliance Awards 2024

The International Brilliance Awards 2024 brought together industry leaders, professionals, and award-winning individuals for an evening of celebration and inspiration.

ServiceMaster Clean AAA and its owner, Siva Kugathas, won four awards categories, making this the fourth year in a row that they have won big at the event.

But what, pray tell, did they win?

The Awards Won

Entrepreneur of the Year – Brilliance Award

This marked Siva as an entrepreneur exemplifying drive, determination and exceptional abilities in creating and administering a successful business, evidenced by his proven record of leadership, ingenuity, tenacity and success.

CEO of the Year – Silver Award

As CEO of the Year, Siva consistently demonstrated clarity of vision, judgment and motivational skills to transform and empower his business.

This award recognises the ability to bring about real change for the better at a company level, in the industry as a whole and in the lives of employees.

Judges also considered entire track records, with extra attention to accomplishments since January 2017.

Having only just hit the ground running when taking over ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Guildford in January 2017, Siva has turned his single territory operation into a 14-territory empire in this time, going from strength to strength in both business and community support.

Brilliance in Customer Services – Gold Award

This award recognises businesses constantly striving to exceed customer expectations with industry-leading service standards and innovation around customer experience.

Judges also examined how ServiceMaster Clean AAA measured customer satisfaction through NPS, our TellServiceMaster system.

As well as the effectiveness of complaint handling and how customer service improves their commercial performance.

Brand Brilliance (Small to Medium) – Silver Award

The Brand Brilliance Award was selected after heavy deliberation.

The winners are the star entries encompassing the best Business Brilliance over the year.

This award demonstrates consistent growth, strong financial performance, and Brand recognition.

Judges searched for exceptional delivery, site engagement and functionality, security, innovation and ethical practice.

They also examined how staff were engaged and developed, how strategic vision is led, managed and implemented, and evidence of a plan for sustained growth.

Siva Kugathas from ServiceMaster Clean AAA has been named Leader of the Year.

Just weeks after winning two awards at the BFA HSBC British Franchise Awards and being made a three-time finalist in the Customer Centricity World Series, Siva Kugathas from ServiceMaster Clean AAA has won a prestigious leadership award.

Siva was awarded the Leader of the Year at the UK Business Awards 2023.

The UK Business Awards ’23

The awards feature 20 categories designed to capture vital aspects of business in the UK.

Siva was nominated for his employee mentorship schemes and his dedication to his team.

The GOLD Leader of the Year award was the highlight of the night and celebrates exceptional leadership as a vital component of commercial success and celebrates the leadership of an inspiring, guiding and reassuring mentor – all of which Siva is in spades!

Award judge and Training Director for First Impression Training, Marie Cross, said of Siva and his accomplishment:

“Having chatted with him at the end of the day, and having heard his back-story (what a fascinating guy!), I’d like to give an extra high-five to Siva Kugathas of ServiceMaster Clean, who won GOLD for Leader of the Year.

What a total inspiration you are Siva, especially to other young, up & coming entrepreneurs who can learn so much from your incredible story of success!”

Siva joined ServiceMaster Clean in 2017 from a background in franchise business management and has grown a single unit in Guildford with 17 staff to a 14-territory empire with over 900 employees.

ServiceMaster Clean AAA’s Employee Experience Strategy

By introducing a rewards scheme and emphasis on team building, Siva has reduced staff turnover and has recruited over 150 new employees this year.

Through the mentorship scheme, senior-level staff have achieved prestigious accountancy, bookkeeping, admin and secretarial skills, and executive leadership qualifications.

Two of these included staff who received qualifications from Oxford University.

The mentorship of Siva’s staff has seen excellent results at all levels of his business.

Staff who initially began with us as cleaners have found ServiceMaster Clean AAA a great place to work and develop.

For example, all regional managers promoted or appointed this year have progressed internally from cleaning or area supervisor roles.

Over half of Siva’s sixteen area manager positions were promoted from cleaners – evidencing the success of his ability to mentor and support staff from an entry-level role to a role with more responsibility.

This is all highly unusual in the cleaning industry, not only because, often, cleaners do not progress within a company – usually due to the lack of internal structure to support their growth – but they also tend not to stay in any one company for too long.

Siva has created a stable workplace environment where his staff are happy to come to work and stay with the business for a long time, as they know that they are valued and will be supported should they aspire to develop their skills.

Siva Kugathas, owner of ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Guildford goes Above & Beyond again.

Siva is owner of one of the fastest growing ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services businesses in the UK and despite the time and effort Siva puts in to providing exceptional service to his clients, he always finds time to give back to the local community and charities.

During the month of February Siva has completed a 100 mile walk/run in aid of Refuge. Not only did he achieve this, he did it whilst recovering from COVID-19. The event took place straight after Siva was ill with COVID-19, which made it far more of a challenge than planned. Despite all of the odds, Siva managed to complete the walk/run for the event. It was very tough to start with, as Siva’s fitness was very poor following the bout of COVID-19. He was forced to take breaks every half a mile, as breathing was struggle due to the effect of COVID-19 on his lungs, but Siva persevered, knowing it was for a good cause.

“I signed up to this challenge before feeling unwell but wanted to meet my commitment to Refuge. It is a vital charity and supports people when they need support the most. I am in a fortunate position and I want to support people who need help and support. I have experienced what it is like to be a refugee myself as a school age child during a war in Sri Lanka and understand the challenges of needing a safe place” said Siva.

Refuge has been running since 1971, and has led campaigns against domestic abuse. They have grown to become the country’s largest single provider of specialist domestic and gender-based violence services. Now supporting over 7,000 women and children on any given day.

Siva also added, “I am proud to have been involved with this event, and at ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Guildford we are always looking to closely work with local charities and support them in any way we can”.

With the ups and downs COVID-19 is bringing to both individuals and businesses ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Guildford have had to adjust frequently in order to meet the changing needs of their clients.

The Christmas period, in particular, has had significant challenges which ServiceMaster Clean Guildford have faced head-on. The big challenge faced as with many other businesses was sickness and self-isolating over the festive period. With cleaning operatives off, it is still as important as ever that the client’s needs are met.

This challenge was resolved with intelligent use of staff and shift changes, as several clients closed their doors temporarily, cleaning operatives and supervisors were issued alternative work allocation. This meant that not only staff that wanted work had it but clients also received continuity of service.

It was noticeable that many offices were closed over the festive period but there was a significant increase in requests for one-off deep cleaning and sanitisation. These requests were brought about by businesses wanting to utilise down time to ensure a thorough deep clean and sanitisation for when they could return to work but also following positive COVID cases. In these instances, it was possible to utilise cleaning operatives that would otherwise be furloughed.

All in all, December was reasonably successful for ServiceMaster Clean Guildford considering Covid and the Christmas break. Clients are happy and no issues have been reported. Considering the impact of Christmas & COVID ServiceMaster Clean Guildford still have 50% growth from December 2019 and over 10% from November 2020 which highlights how they have managed continuity of service in such difficult times.

Despite the success of this challenging period so far, ServiceMaster Clean Guildford are not resting on their laurels, planning is still as important as ever and both client service levels and staff levels will be closely monitored. It is important that the business remain strong, effective furloughing of cleaning operatives and management will be used where necessary but the aim is to keep enough provision to ensure continuity of service for valued clients.

Is your current cleaning provider meeting the mark when it comes to your cleaning requirements? Or are gaps starting to emerge?

The Brand Brilliance award was selected by judges after a healthy debate, and the winner was the star entry that encompasses the very best of Business Brilliance over the year. This award was to go to the candidate that best demonstrated consistent growth, strong financial performance and Brand recognition. Judges looked for evidence of exceptional delivery, site engagement and functionality, security, innovation and ethical practice. They also looked at how the staff are engaged and developed, how the organisation’s strategic vision is led, managed and implemented, and evidence of a plan for sustained growth.

To add to the recognition, Siva and his team also came second in UK Business of the Year Award. 2020 has been a very successful year for CS Guildford, Thames Valley, Bracknell, Luton & Watford, as they have adapted to the ever changing COVID-19 situation and been able to support their clients where needed. Building blocks are in place to make 2021 even better.

“I couldn’t be happier to receive more recognition for our commitment to customer service & going ‘Above & Beyond’ in all that we do. The cleaning industry is an industry that has perhaps been overlooked in the past but due to COVID-19 may be valued more by many. I always strive to be the best in what I do and these awards are further validation of this.” Siva Kugathas, Franchisee.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Guildford (Owned by Siva Kugathas) have won yet another award. This award shows the exceptional dedication to customer service and business growth in the ‘Transformation’ category of the HSBC British Franchise awards. The transformation award is for business owners that have taken on an existing business and transformed it from good to great.

As always, there was stiff competition including from a rival commercial cleaning company, but Siva and his team have an exceptional story that showed their dedication to the ServiceMaster ethos of going ‘Above and Beyond’ in all that they do. Siva has developed a culture of providing exceptional customer service and staff development, which has resulted in strong growth and expansion for the company in all areas.

Siva purchased ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Guildford from the previous owner in January 2017, and due to their commercial success, the business quickly expanded into the Thames Valley & Bracknell areas followed by Watford & Luton earlier in 2020.

“I feel incredibly proud to be recognised for our commitment to customer service & going ‘Above & Beyond’ in all that we do, in an industry that has perhaps been overlooked before COVID-19. I always strive to be the best in what I do and this BFA award is validation of this.” Siva Kugathas, Franchisee.

A veteran in the franchising industry, our very own, Siva Kugathas has been shortlisted in the Transformation category at the bfa HSBC British Franchise Awards, taking place at the Vox, Birmingham, on November 30.

Siva, who before taking over the ServiceMaster Guildford franchise in January 2017, had already had a career in franchising for over 20 years with both KFC and Pizza Hut, used all that knowledge to transform the business, with turnover now 10 times that of when he first took on the resale.

He chose ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services, a contract commercial cleaning specialist franchise as he believed the potential for growth was evident.

“I am always looking for different and unusual ways to promote my business. In 2017 I featured on Eagle Radio in a carpet cleaning video for “National Clean Your Floors Day.”

Yes, that’s right, a video for radio. It was posted across the radio stations social media platforms and had great results. From this short video, I was noticed by a local company and secured a contract worth £100,000. It’s so exciting when trying something new has such a positive impact on your business.

I already feel incredibly proud to be recognised as a finalist in the BFA Awards. To me, they are the pinnacle of franchise industry awards and winning would be the ultimate achievement. I always strive to be the best in what I do and a BFA award would be a validation of this.” Siva Kugathas, Franchisee.

Pip Wilkins QFP, CEO of the bfa, said:

“In little more than three years, Siva has taken an existing franchise unit and increased its turnover tenfold. This is a fantastic achievement and it has also benefitted people in the community as he has gone from hiring one supervisor to one office manager, one operations manager, three area managers, one sales executive and seven mobile cleaners.”

Andrew Brattesani, Head of Franchising at HSBC, added:

“From the offset, Siva was determined to double the size of his business in 18 months. He focused heavily on maintaining relationships with the existing client base and receiving monthly feedback from customers, as well as putting staff retention at the centre of his objectives.”

Siva will go head-to-head against three other franchisees in November.

Good luck Siva!

The last couple of months have been tough for many local businesses and services as they were forced to temporarily close in March when lockdown was put in place; but some had to remain open. Schools, GP surgeries and some businesses all had to remain open to provide vital services. Staying open to provide these valuable services also created its own challenges, keeping staff, patients and pupils safe had new hurdles to overcome.

ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Guildford (Owned by Siva Kugathas) provide daily and weekly cleaning for lots of local businesses, schools, nurseries and healthcare providers all year round; and as their client’s needs changed, they were able to adapt working patterns to ensure that their cleaning staff could meet the increased demand on some of their client’s sites to ensure that they could continue to operate safely.

Not only have ServiceMaster Guildford managed to meet the changing needs of their existing clients but, Siva and his team were more than equipped to help new clients that needed additional cleaning support during the crisis to help them to stay open safely. Suitable PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) was provided for all of the cleaning staff that kept working to help keep both them and their clients safe. All ServiceMaster Guildford staff received and continue to receive regular communication to ensure they are up to date with changing requirements.

It has long been ServiceMaster Guildfords aim to establish a long-term relationship with their clients in which they play a key role in enhancing the image, cleanliness and hygiene of their clients premises.

In 2018 ServiceMaster Guildford invested in EShield technology, a disinfection system using electrostatic sprayers. They were the first approved users of the patented EShield technology in the UK, and this technology has enabled them to also provide COVID-19 sanitisation within 24 hours of a call from their client. ServiceMaster Guildford have sanitised offices and factories that had had positive COVID-19 cases, enabling them to reopen their premises to resume their services as soon as possible. The requirements for general deep cleans and sanitisation is also increasing as more businesses and services are allowed to open.

Siva’s priority is to go above and beyond to provide exceptional customer service, he is working with all of his clients to help them to continue to operate by implementing new or reviewing current cleaning processes to help make it safe for all.

In December , ServiceMaster Clean COntract Services Canterbury/Ashford carried out a Beach Clean to raise money for Porchlight. Porchlight is the largest charity in Kent that helps the homeless and vulnerable.

Here at ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services Canterbury we are passionate about cleaning and giving back to our local community.

As part of our commitment to our local community and our company environmental ethos, ServiceMaster Canterbury took part in a Beach clean. The beach clean took place on Friday 13th November and four members of the office team took part. The team were provided with a litter picking kit by the foreshore services through Canterbury Council and were given a specific part of the beach to clean.
The clean took about an hour and a half in total and made a noticeable difference to the beach so all of the local residents can enjoy it more. As part of our environmentally aware ethos at ServiceMaster Canterbury, we are putting plans in place to take part in more regular beach cleans during 2020.
ServiceMaster Canterbury are putting in plans to go ‘Above and Beyond’ not only in cleaning but also giving back to our local community and raising money for a local charity while we are at it.
Here’s to a brighter, cleaner, healthier 2020
