ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland has long supported Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and is sponsoring the Heart of London Bridges Walk again.
This summer, about 1,200 participants gathered for the annual event, walking in memory of loved ones and raising awareness about the impact of sudden cardiac death among young people.
The 6.5-mile route along the River Thames has grown into a meaningful event for families, supporters, and volunteers. It offers a chance to honour those who have died and to raise awareness of heart conditions affecting young people, emphasising the significance of cardiac screening.
Supporting CRY holds profound personal significance for ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland. The company has sustained its relationship with the charity over many years through Nick Dee Shapland and his family, especially after the loss of Nick’s daughter, Claire Dee Shapland.
CRY thanked ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland for its continued sponsorship, saying:
“Your generous sponsorship was greatly appreciated. Thanks to your support we were able to ensure that more money raised from our supporters went directly to our charitable, support and prevention programmes. Thank you once again for continuously helping us raise awareness and support families.”
This year also marked the 20th anniversary of Team Buzz, a charity cycling challenge originally created in Claire’s memory.
The first Team Buzz ride saw the group cycle from Cherbourg to Montpellier in France to raise awareness and funds for CRY. Two decades later, Claire’s brother Mark and Team Buzz got back in the saddle for another major challenge, cycling from Buffalo to New York from 10th to 14th August 2026.
The ride raised money for both CRY and the American Heart Association, continuing a family commitment that has now spanned 20 years.
Nick has also seen CRY’s work first-hand through his time as a CRY Representative for Berkshire.
“Over the last 20 years, I have been able to see the valuable work of CRY first-hand, especially during my time as a CRY Representative for Berkshire,” said Nick.
“Raising awareness is so important, particularly around screening programmes for 14 to 35-year-olds. I was reminded again of the importance of screening after hearing about 15-year-old Oxford United academy goalkeeper Amelia Aplin, who tragically collapsed and died on the football pitch in March 2026. My immediate feeling was that this should not be happening in this day and age.”
CRY works to reduce the incidence of young sudden cardiac death through awareness, screening and research, while also supporting families affected by these sudden losses.
For ServiceMaster Clean by Deeland, its continued support for CRY is about far more than sponsoring a single event. It reflects a personal connection to the charity and a commitment to raising awareness of the importance of cardiac screening for young people.
